Motifs-
Brotherhood:
The tree that Amir carved "Amir and Hassan Sultans of Kabul" creates the image that they will be friends forever.
Baba and Ali where raised like brothers. He also begs them to stay with him and Amir.
Amir and Hassan nursed from the same woman.
Baba and Rahim Khan were close enough that Baba told him that Hassan was his son.
Hassan stood up to Assef when he threatened Amir.
War, Death, and Blood:
We are introduced to death when Amir reveals that his mother lost too much blood giving birth to him and died.
The way that Amir and Hassan test the string on their kites is by running their fingers across it to see how well it cuts.
The boys at school compare cuts on their hands from the summer of kite fighting.
Russia invades Afghanistan and people flee because Russia had a very powerful Army.
The Taliban defeats the Russian invaders, but that doesn't make it safe for Afghans because they rule without any compassion as we see in the execution at Ghazi Stadium.
We learn that Hassan and Farzana died.
Sohrab cuts his wrist to attempt suicide.
Guilt, Jealousy and Betrayal:
Amir is jealous of the way that Baba treats Hassan.
Amir feels guilt because he didn't do anything to stop Assef from raping Hassan.
Amir's guilt leads to his betrayal of Hassan when he frames him for stealing Amir's watch and money.
Amir becomes more jealous when Ali and Hassan say that they are leaving and Baba begs them to stay and forgives Hassan for stealing so quickly, we later find out that he forgave Hassan so quickly because of his own guilt.
Sohrab tries to kill himself because he felt like Amir betrayed him.
Stories:
Amir reads stories to Hassan when they were young.
Sohrab is named after a character in Hassan's favorite story that Amir would read him.
Amir made up his own ending to the story when he'd read it to Hassan.
We later find out that Hassan learned to read and Amir wonders what Hassan thought about the real ending to the story.
Family:
In Afghan culture who your family is, is very important.
When Amir wants to marry Soraya, Baba has to ask General Taheri's permission.General and Khanum Taheri
People in Afghanistan are thought of as important not only based on the things they do but who they are related to.
In the novel family also has an importance because Amir and Soraya want to have a family but find out that she is infertile.
Amir going to Afghanistan and bringing Sohrab back to America gives them the family that they want.
Acceptance and Forgiveness:
Throughout the novel Amir is in search of either the acceptance of Baba or forgiveness for batraying the best friend anyone could ever ask for.
Hassan forgave Amir for not doing anything to stop him from getting raped by Assef, even though Amir didn't know it until he read Hassan's letter at Rahim Khan's apatment in Pakistan.
Amir doesn't really get the acceptance he seeks from Baba until Baba is dying.
In the end Amir is struggling to fogive Baba for not telling him that Hassan was his brother.
